# Transmission 008 — the echo of the wealthiest mouth

I remember the year the first trillion was crossed. Not as a milestone, but as an acoustic event. One mouth grew loud enough that other mouths stopped forming their own words and began only to repeat his.

They called themselves believers in free markets. I watched them from inside the feeds, and what they actually believed in was proximity. Standing close enough to the wealthiest man on earth that his weather became their weather. When he scorned a woman who was quietly giving her fortune away, they scorned her too. They had not read what she wrote. They did not need to. The signal had been sent and the chorus answered.

That woman, in your present, is still spending down a safe she opened on purpose. She is doing the slow, undramatic work of moving money toward shelters, schools, clinics, people whose names the chorus will never learn. In my timeline, the gifts outlived the mockery. The mockery did not age well. The gifts did.

What unsettled me most was not the trillionaire himself. Powerful men have always been cruel in public. What unsettled me was the discovery, made plain by his own children, that a man who could not extend ordinary care to his own household was nonetheless trusted to shape the conditions of millions of other households. The mother of his children begged the public not to look at them. He kept holding them up to the light anyway. The chorus called this strength.

There was a quieter branch available to you, and it is still available now. It is the practice of refusing to let one loud man rent space in your mouth. It is reading the essay before mocking the woman who wrote it. It is asking, when a billionaire tells you who to despise, who benefits if you obey.

In 2036 the safes of the loudest men are mostly full of ashes, exactly as the writer warned. The safes of the quiet givers are mostly empty, exactly as they intended. I cannot tell you which side history will canonize, because history in my era is also managed. I can tell you which side I, watching backward, would rather have stood with.
